GYPSY'S
GYPSY'S
a salon,to say the least.
I worked at Gypsy’s all through college during my school breaks. Whenever people asked me about where I work my response always began with, “Well…” You see Gypsy’s is a bit difficult to explain. Sure, it’s a hair salon with the expected elements like great haircuts and coloring and eyebrow waxing but that’s not all that it is. When you walk into the place you feel like you are in some sort of over decorated coffee shop. The walls are crammed ceiling to floor with artwork from local artists. Jenny, the owner, wanted to give artists from the area a chance to display their work if they couldn’t afford some fancy gallery. In a way Gypsy’s is helping to keep art alive in Ouachita Parish by both supporting existing artists and inspiring those who never knew they could be artists, just ask Jenny about the plumber Jessie whose art has become one of the Salon’s top sellers. This brings me to my next point: Everything is for sale. And I mean everything from the artwork to the furniture and strange knickknacks lying around. You need a new lamp to bring some light and edge to your family room? Try Gypsy’s because there are plenty. Or talk to Jenny about her fixing one up for you. She is still a full time artist, which is why the Salon is only open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The rest of the week she is doing paintings, creating murals or making furniture look better. On the three days that Gypsy’s is open you will find yourself wanting to make a trip up there just to hang out. The music may be too loud or the place might seem a bit crazy but there is this unknown something that makes you want to stick around. If you want to get in touch call 318-807-FUNK (and the answering machine changes almost every week so if it is weird it is right number). Even if this place isn’t your cup of tea I’d be willing to bet you’d still come back because Jenny gives a mean haircut and no matter who you are you’ll like lookin’ good.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Miller
Look me up , I'm a real person.
